508 Compliance Accessibility Testing
Alphapointe provides 508 Compliance website accessibility testing for organizations and companies. Our Department of Homeland Security Trusted Tester Certified technicians will test your online/digital platforms and provide recommendations for ensuring your web content meets Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
What Is 508 Compliance?
These standards address access to information and communication technology (ICT) under Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act and Section 255 of the Communications Act. Section 508 requires access to ICT developed, procured, maintained or used by federal agencies. Examples include computers, telecommunications equipment, multifunction office machines such as copiers that also operate as printers, software, websites, information kiosks and transaction machines and electronic documents. The Section 508 Standards, which are part of the Federal Acquisition Regulation, ensure access for people with physical, sensory or cognitive disabilities.
Why Is It Important?
Website accessibility refers to making websites usable by all people, regardless of their ability, education or technology. Choosing to make your website more accessible is a way to serve a larger customer base. On average, 13.2 million people in the United States have at least one disability that Section 508 is meant to help with. When encountering accessibility issues, most consumers with disabilities will simply move on to a site that is easier to use. By not adhering to WCAG, you could be leaving your organization open to lawsuits. The number of website accessibility lawsuits (i.e. lawsuits alleging that plaintiffs with a disability could not use websites because they were not coded to work with assistive technologies like screen readers, or otherwise accessible to them) filed in federal court under Title III of the ADA has exploded in recent years.
