College Preparatory Program

College Preparatory Program (PREP)

Achieve success in college with our College Preparatory Program (PREP) and increase the chances of success and ease the transition

PREP is for students who are visually impaired and transitioning from high school to college or that have been to college and have not found a way to successfully navigate all the tasks required of an effective college student. It is available year-round and students may participate in a semester or a summer term.

College classes are taken at a Kansas City Metropolitan Community College and are supplemented with presentations by Alphapointe staff and current or recent college graduates. College tuition, books and supplies, reasonable transportation expenses, and support services provided by Alphapointe staff are all included in the price of the program.

This program also works for individuals that have earned college credit before they lost their eye sight and now need help with setting up college accommodations and familiarizing themselves to a new college environment so that they become a successful college student. For out-of-town students, housing is offered at the Extended Stay, or other options provided by Rehabilitation Services for the Blind. Most housing options can provide transportation services to the college campus.

For entry into the program it is suggested that students possess: secondary level reading, writing, and math skills; s note-taking medium; independent living skills, including mobility skills; computer skills adequate for producing acceptable written work; ability to navigate the internet; use of Blackboard Academic Suite, operational usage of Microsoft Office including accessing email (Outlook)
