With early treatment, 95% of people with significant diabetic retinopathy can avoid substantial vision loss. Without proper medical care and diabetes self management skills complications may arise and directly impact a person's ability to actively participate in the community, function in the home, and maintain employment. Common complications of diabetes include: nerve damage (neuropathy), heart disease, kidney disease, foot and skin problems, and eye disease. Diabetes management and self-management skills, therefore, are important training components at Alphapointe.
Individuals participating in Alphapointe's Diabetes Management Program receive: one-on-one, group, and community based management classes; individualized training with adaptive devices and techniques to monitor blood glucose, measure insulin, identify medications; and strategies to manage nutritional and exercise guidelines. An on site diabetes lab and exercise room allow for hands on instruction and implementation of new skills and techniques throughout one's training.
Alphapointe networks with local and national agencies to make appropriate referrals for optimal healthcare. Alphapointe collaborates with local and national agencies to aggressively increase awareness about issues related to diabetes. Alphapointe works alongside individuals to increase diabetes self-management skills and overall health and wellness to facilitate independence in the home, community, and workplace.
